It is challenging to find a Patek Philippe Nautilus preowned, but not impossible. The watches hold their value, especially the stainless-steel model, for which you are likely to spend up to three times the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). Preowned gold Nautilus watches generally sell for more than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

Patek Philippe maintains the exclusivity and quality of the Patek Philippe Nautilus. The waiting list is very long, even if you are a preferred client with an exceptional relationship with the company. All Patek Philippe watches are hand-finished, and production cannot keep up with demand.

Queen Victoria owned a Patek Philippe pendant watch, and Queen Elizabeth II owns a Patek Philippe ref 4975/1G. Victoria Beckham, the British fashion designer, owns a Nautilus ref 7118. Other well-known personalities that own Nautilus watches include the actors Robert Downey Jnr, Don Cheadle, Brad Pitt, and Jason Statham.

Patek brand story

Patek Philippe is the last independent, family-owned watchmaking company based in Geneva, Switzerland. The company has been manufacturing watches, without interruption, since 1839 and is named after its founders, Antoine Norbert de Patek and Adrien Philippe. The Stern family owns Patek Philippe since 1932, and family members are still active in the management of the company.

Exclusivity is the foundation of the Patek Philippe brand story. More than 200 models are in production, but only a dozen to several hundred of each model is manufactured. The human touch is vital to the brand, and all Patek Philippe watches are hand-finished.

Each Patek Philippe watch has a unique reference number and receives the quality hallmark of the company, the Patek Philippe Seal. This seal applies to every part of the watch, including the movements, case, and other exterior components. It confirms the movements are exceptionally accurate, with a tolerance of no more than -3/+2 seconds per day.

Nautilus story

The Patek Philippe Nautilus, Reference 3700, was designed in 1976 by Gerald Genta, who also designed a watch for Cartier. It was the first sports watch manufactured by the company and is stainless steel with a porthole-shaped case, with water resistance of up to 120 meters. It had a rounded octagonal bezel, integrated steel bracelet, and a simple time and date blue-to-black gradient dial.

Today the Nautilus is available in models for men and women in stainless steel, rose gold, white gold, or two-tone combinations. Nautilus dials features are a sunburst finish, gold hour markers, and luminescent coating. The dial colours include black, green, grey, brown, and blue. Six different calibers are used for the Nautilus collection.

According to Patek Philippe, it takes approximately 55 different hand-finishing operations to complete the Nautilus case and bracelet after machining.

Handmade – everyone is unique

Patek Philippe believes in savoir-faire, a polished sureness, and exemplifies this by their attention to detail through hand-finishing. Hand-finishing is a skill conveyed by human touch that brings beauty and precision to every Patek Philippe watch.

Dedicated, trained specialists, using skills passed down generations, work by hand on watch components after they were fabricated by machinery. The dial is hand-enamelled, and numerals are applied by hand. The case and all movement components are hand-finished to smooth away tiny burs or traces of machining that might impede the perfect movement of the parts.

All precious stones used in a Patek Philippe case or bracelet are of the highest quality. A gem setter sets them by hand, and no gem is ever bonded with adhesive. The gem setter positions each precious stone in its mount, either in a bezel setting or in an invisible setting.
