Nomos Glashutte, the German brand known for its minimalist design and Bauhaus inspired looks, is a young brand, founded shortly after German re-unification in 1990, although the brand did exist for a short time in the early 1900’s.
The name Nomos is Greek for ‘Law’ and suits the plain, ordered simplicity of the unisex brand. Based in a tiny watchmaking enclave in Saxony, Germany that is home to around 12 other watch brands, including A. Lange and Sohne and Glashutte Original, watches that bear the Glashutte name must prove that at least 50% of the value does originate from the Glashutte village.
In 1991 the first four launch collections were the Nomos Orion, Nomos Tetra, Nomos Tangente and Nomos Ludwig. These early models used ETA movements but over time, and with some external investment, they developed their own in- house movement which was launched in 2005 in a model called the Nomos Tangomat. At this point they qualified to use the appellation Glashutte. A further achievement in 2014 was the launch of the Nomos Metro which included their first in-house escapement.
